Indian classical music is the classical music of the Indian subcontinent, this includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It has two major traditions: the North Indian and Pakistani classical music tradition is called Hindustani, while the South Indian and Sri Lankan expression is called Carnatic. The two systems continue to have more common features than differences.Hindustani, like Carnatic music, is based on Raga and Tala.

Raga may be roughly described as a musical entity that includes note intonation, relative duration and order, in a manner similar to how words flexibly form phrases to create an atmosphere of expression.

ഇന്ത്യൻ ശാസ്ത്രീയ സംഗീതം എന്നത് ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിന്റെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ സംഗീതമാണ് , ഇതിൽ ഇന്ത്യ, പാകിസ്ഥാൻ, ബംഗ്ലാദേശ്, ശ്രീലങ്ക, നേപ്പാൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇതിന് രണ്ട് പ്രധാന പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്: ഉത്തരേന്ത്യൻ, പാകിസ്ഥാൻ ക്ലാസിക്കൽ സംഗീത പാരമ്പര്യത്തെ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി എന്നും ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ, ശ്രീലങ്കൻ പ്രയോഗങ്ങളെ കർണാടിക് എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു .രണ്ട് സിസ്റ്റങ്ങൾക്കും വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളെക്കാൾ പൊതുവായ സവിശേഷതകൾ ഉണ്ട് . കർണാടക സംഗീതം പോലെ തന്നെ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനിയും രാഗം, താളം എന്നിവയെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ളതാണ്.

വ്യക്തവും സുനിശ്ചിതവും ആയ സ്വരസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഉള്ള ശബ്ദ സഞ്ചാരം കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന സംഗീതം ആണ് രാഗം. അതായത് ചിട്ടയായി ക്രമീകരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള സ്വരസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലൂടെ ശബ്ദം കടന്നുപോവുമ്പോൾ വളരെ വ്യക്തമായ ഒരു ഈണം.
